Hiring Staff

What you must know about hiring staff for your small business

kristy-lee Johnston Footprint Recruitment We asked our resident HR & Recruitment guru Kristy-Lee Johnston from Footprint Recruitment what the top 5 tips for small business are when hiring staff.

Here are the top 5 things she advises you must focus on:

1. If you pay peanuts you get monkeys, pay what the role is worth and everyone benefits.

2. Hire for fit, train for skills (no matter how technically sound they are, if they don’t fit in with the team it’ll never work)

3. Know what you’re looking for before you start recruiting (scope out exactly what you need and want, start with a  job description and a list of the skills and experience you need and the minimum you are willing to except)

4. Recruiting staff takes time and effort, if you aren’t prepared to put both in to the process get help or outsource.  A bad or scattered approach to the recruiting process can cost you time, money and effort (in some cases it can be thousands of dollars)

5. Check their background, skills and work history (Don’t rely entirely on your gut feel, use skills testing, reference checking and other relevant assessments to check that they have the skills they say they have).
